Recycling and garbage management are extremely important because it helps to cut down on the quantity of waste that is transported to landfills and incinerators, which can assist to safeguard natural resources, minimise air and water pollution, and also cut down on energy and materials required to make new products. More so, recycling may support job growth, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and offer industries a vital source of raw materials. Additionally, recycling and waste disposal can help to reduce the amount of hazardous materials released into the environment by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators, which is precisely what needs to be done in terms of efficient waste management and recycling in Srinagar city.
The concerned authorities must have spent millions and implemented several measures at the Achan dumping site, but none of them has been successful, as evidenced by the fact that the foul smell continues to emanate from the site. As a result, the population living within a 5-kilometre radius of the site is essentially living in a stinky chamber, which has an impact on both their health and their land resources. The problem, which at the moment appears to be confined to a limited area, has the potential to grow into something nasty and dangerous that, given enough time, might begin to affect the entire city or at least a significant portion of it. The government must take the required actions to manage and recycle waste because waste management has to be ensured seriously.
There is a need to implement a waste management system, particularly in Kashmir, to ensure the appropriate disposal of all waste kinds, and at the same time, create policies to encourage the use of reusable materials rather than single-use plastics. To reduce landfill waste, the government, which must take action seriously in this regard, could establish financial incentives for companies that support waste reduction, reuse, and recycling as well as make a point of investing in advanced recycling technologies, like gasification and plasma arc melting. If the government does not take action seriously, we could be in real problems very soon.
