Police clash with Shiite Muslim Mourners during Muharram procession in Srinagar

Nearly half dozen of Shiite mourners were detained by police after they tried to bring out a Muharram procession through the city centre Lal chowk. Authorities had imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar to prevent Shiite mourners from taking out mourning processions on the 10th day of Muslim holy month of Muharram. Authorities have banned main Muharram procession in city centre after the eruption of militancy in the region in 1989. However, Kashmiri Shiite Muslims except for the city centre, have been bringing out Muharram procession throughout the region.
